| Anne Pratt 1806-1893 | |||||
![]() |
Anne Pratt was one of the more successful botanical artists of her gender and time. In 1826, when she was twenty years old, Anne Pratt left home and moved to Brixton to live with friends. There, she tried to get her work published. It took her several years before her first book appeared in print. Flowers and their Associations, published in 1828, contained beautiful illustrations drawn by Pratt and sold very well. Her next book, The Field, the Garden, and the Woodland, was published a short time later. Her glorious illustrations were botanically accurate and she became quite a popular illustrator and author. When her book about botany, Wild Flowers, was published, the colored block prints by W. Dickes, created from Anne's original botanical studies, quite impressed Queen Victoria. A prolific writer and artist, Anne Pratt also published Garden Flowers of the Year. In 1849, she began work on one of her most extensive projects; five volumes of The Flowering Plants, Grasses, Sedges and Ferns of Great Britain (1855-1866). These volumes were readily accepted by the public because of their accurate, clear, and precise writing, as well as their winsome paintings. Interspersed throughout the text and drawings are delightful anecdotes about plants. Even today, her work continues to intrigue and excite collectors of botanical illustration. -From "Women of Flowers" by Jack Kramer |

| Dr. Thorton's Temple of Flora 1812 | |||||
| A
dramatic series of prints from Dr. Thornton’s justifiably famous Temple
of Flora. Designed as a grand tribute to the Swedish botanist, Linnaeus,
Thornton’s opus is considered by many to be the most magnificent
botanical work ever produced. The images, which were drawn by a number of
artists, have a bold and unique dramatic impact, partly from the elaborate
process by which they were made and partly from the use of ‘classical’
landscapes in the backgrounds. Thornton’s prints were first issued in a
large folio size around the turn of the century, and then in 1812 Thornton
issued a more affordable quarto edition. Though smaller in size, the
quarto prints still have the dramatic scenes and much of the visual impact
of their larger siblings. With their varied and striking backgrounds, rich
texture and color and fascinating compositions, these are botanicals
unlike any others.
